Generally I'm pretty iffy when it comes to remakes, but the 2014 version of Godzilla was a lot of fun. Granted, this isn't a movie I'd necessarily recommend if you're looking for the kind of plot that shakes your core and ignites your mind, but if you just want an enjoyable action movie with crazy monsters, then give your mind over to Godzilla, king of the monsters.
Like I said, the plot isn't exactly earth-shattering, but it isn't bad either. The beginning really sets up an important emotional tone that helps anchor the movie to its audience. The acting in this movie is great, and Ford becomes an easy hero to root for. We all know we're here to see an impossibly gigantic monster that creates all kind of havoc, but the movie knows it can't just throw the creature at us without introducing the characters and their motivations first. So we delve into the world of secret government tests and experiments that were in place to kill Godzilla, and we watch as the monster we see first, the MUTO, breaks free and wrecks things across the country as it calls for its mate to come breed. Pretty typical crazy monster stuff.
And along comes Godzilla (finally!) to battle and show these two MUTO's who is boss in monster town. Nothing unpredictable happens, though the blue fire or what the hell ever it is that Godzilla Godzilla is kind of one those movies where you should know what to expect.
shoots from his mouth was done in an awesome way and I loved the effect. I really don't have much else to say about the movie. It was fun and I enjoyed the monster fights, but I could see why other people may have been kind of bored with it too. It all depends on what you're looking for from this movie, but at the same time
Since the theme of this class is monsters, let's do a quick evaluation of Godzilla. Would I run like hell and scream like a small child if I saw Godzilla storming the streets of Greensburg? Yes, yes I would. I work at SHU and if you've been on the ghost tour during residency you know we have some underground tunnels below the school, so maybe I'd hide out there with the ghosts and cockroaches until Godzilla found some tasty underground to go chase.
I love a good monster fight movie. I honestly couldn't tell you much about the plot of this movie, but I can tell you it was very pretty and super fun.
ReplyDeleteHahah if Godzilla showed up in Greensburg he'd be done in like two minutes, looking for something else to smash. But when I saw the film in the theaters I didn't notice the lack of Godzilla for some reason (I do now), but I guess I was caught up in the monster anticipation? Yeah, that's probably it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the other Godzilla movies, so I have nothing to compare this to. But in this movie, I thought the use of characters with hopes and loves and feelings was a great aspect that, as you said, went a way toward anchoring the film. However, I would like to have seen more of the characters other than the soldier boy. I feel like the movie made an attempt at providing an emotional impact, but then it fell short because the character relationships weren't developed enough.
ReplyDeleteI agree. "Fun" is the best way to describe this film. However, I think there needs to be a distinction here. There are a lot of really bad "fun" movies. This was passably alright. It wasn't the best, obviously, but it still did will despite it's cheesyness.
